Northport is an incorporated village in the Town of Huntington located on Long Island’s picturesque North Shore. The charming village has a bustling Main Street lined with restaurants, shops and the harbor front. There are concerts in the village park during the summer and the famed John W. Engelman Theater is also located on Main Street. Today you can still see the trolley rails which brought commuters to the village from the main station on Larkfield Rd.
The area was originally inhabited by the Matinecock Indians.
Chief Asharoken sold the area to three Englishmen in 1656. The land was perfect for farming and the early settlers grazed cattle on pastures around the harbor. The area soon became known as Great Cow Harbor. In the 1800’s the areas popularity in ship building brought growth and change. A stroll through Northport still brings nostalgic feelings of a time gone by. As of the United States 2010 Census, the village population was 7,401. Students attend the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District.
